My Story

My name is Rohina, I'm 20 years old. I am originally from Afghanistan. My family and i moved to India when i was a baby. When I was about one years old my father was killed and that is when everything changed. Me, my mom, and my brother we moved to Pakistan where my moms family was. We lived in a house with 1 bedroom and one huge living room where everyone was staying. My 3 uncles, one of their wifes, their 2 kids and also my grandparents, including us 3. Can you just imagine how crouded it was. no one had any privacy.
In 2002 we came to the United States as refugees. that was a huge turning point for us. I never really paid attention to my smile as a kid untill i got to middle school. The place where I met alot of judgmental people who would make fun of me, call me names. I was emotionly abused, I never thought i would be that girl that everyone at school picked on. I remember not wanting to go to school. I had missed so many days, I'm suprised I didnt get held back.
I started bugging my mom about braces. but she was just a single mom she could only do so much for us. When I turned 15 I got my first job as a cashier at Mcdonalds. I tried saving up but it was so hard for me. I barely had any hours plus I was still in school. Everywhere I went they asked for about $1,000 for the down payment. I ended up giving up on braces for a while but I felt more and more insecure as I got older. I never smiled. When i turned 20 I gave it one more shot at trying to get braces, that is when I was so blessed to meet Dr. Curtis and Dr. Metz. they chose me for the My Smiles Transformation program. I am getting free treatment by them. I was in shock, i couldnt believe it was happening to me. Please feel free to follow me on my journey of finally getting my braces!
yours truely, Rohina.
